Salem Auction House is now Salem Art House
A single painting. A lifelong collection. A house filled with objects gathered over generations. You do not need to know how or where your property should be sold before contacting us. We begin by understanding what you have.
01
Begin with our online submission form or contact us directly. Photographs are usually enough for an initial review. For larger collections and estates, we may arrange a conversation or site visit.
02
We consider the property, condition, available provenance, current market, and the most appropriate method of sale. Not every object belongs in the same market.
03
If we accept property for consignment, we provide a written Consignment & Seller Agreement before the property is offered — commission, reserve (if any), authorized expenses, insurance, sale method, payment terms, and unsold-property arrangements. You review it before signing.
04
Depending on the property and method of sale, our work may include photography, research, cataloging, description, condition documentation, marketing, and auction preparation.
05
For auction consignments, property is offered according to the terms of the applicable auction. A reserve may be established when agreed in advance. An estimate is an opinion about the market, not a guarantee of the selling price.
06
We provide the consignor with an accounting showing the sale and applicable deductions. Consignor proceeds are handled separately from operating funds, and payment is made according to the written agreement and applicable law.
If you’re not sure whether something fits, ask us. Discovery is part of the work.
Not every object sells the first time. We may discuss offering it again, adjusting the reserve, a private sale, another market or specialist, or returning the property — documented with the consignor.
Select works may deserve consideration outside a general auction. We may discuss private sale, specialist placement, or consideration by Stefani Art Gallery — two distinct businesses; any change is discussed and documented.
Rather than automatically placing an entire household in a single auction, we assess the property as a whole and identify items or collections that merit individual attention.
An auction estimate or preliminary review is not a formal appraisal. If you require a formal appraisal for estate, tax, insurance, or litigation purposes, we can discuss involving a qualified professional.
You do not need to prepare a complete inventory. Send several photographs and whatever information you have.
